Telegram Hits 950M Users As Crypto Game Surge

Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of Telegram, has announced that the platform now boasts 950 million monthly active users, up from 900 million in the spring. Durov previously attributed this surge in users to the growing popularity of games on Telegram.

These games utilize The Open Network (TON), a blockchain system initially developed by Telegram but later handed over to external developers as an open-source project. The gaming trend on Telegram began with Notcoin (NOT), a simple game where players tap to earn in-game coins, with the promise of future crypto rewards. This game attracted millions of users eager to convert their virtual coins into NOT tokens on TON.

The NOT token was officially launched in May 2024, receiving support from major exchanges like Binance and OKX, marking it as the most significant gaming token event of the year.

Another popular game, Hamster Kombat, which features a similar tap-to-earn mechanic, has also gained widespread popularity. With its engaging gameplay and various reward options, the game reached 100 million users by June.

Hamster Kombat even caught the attention of the Iranian government, which expressed concern that the game might distract voters from the presidential election. Earlier this month, Hamster Kombat had 239 million users, and it currently enjoys a player base exceeding 250 million.

Building on the success of Notcoin and Hamster Kombat, numerous new crypto games have emerged on Telegram. Games like Yescoin, TapSwap, and Catizen are preparing to launch their own cryptocurrencies on TON, indicating a burgeoning trend in the integration of gaming and blockchain technology.

This explosive growth in user engagement and the integration of blockchain technology in gaming underscore the transformative potential of TON. As more developers explore the possibilities within this ecosystem, Telegram is poised to remain at the forefront of the intersection between social media and decentralized finance. With a user base approaching one billion, the platform’s influence and reach continue to expand, shaping the future of digital interaction and cryptocurrency adoption.
